What Broke Your Sports Heart?

jordan_050427.jpgAll of this talk about our teams, I am interested to hear the moment in sports that broke your heart. Since I’m originally from Cleveland, there ain’t a blog big enough to list all of mine. Let’s just call my entire childhood following Cleveland Sports one big heartbreak. The image to the left says it all. MJ is lucky he delivered Carolina a championship. Otherwise, I don’t know if I would have ever recovered….

So, “Cleveland” covers one big one. Here’s a few others -

1. Bo Jackson breaking his hip against The Bengals

2. Albert Belle’s hip breaking down all too soon

3. Magic Johnson retiring and the reason why…

4. Len Bias, Hank Gathers, Reggie Lewis

5. “The Tuck Rule” – IT WAS A FUMBLE BRADY!!!!

Last but not least…..

6. Not changing your plays before playing against your old coach in the Superbowl.

  1. Both of them had me speechless.

  2. 1. The Houston Oilers – pick a year…

    2. So far, the Houston Texans – pick a year…(I’ve got hope though.)

    3. Ken Caminiti’s overdose.

    4. Jeff Bagwell’s shoulder keeping him from returning.

    5. After finally making it to one, The Houston Astros’ loss in the World Series.

    6. OJ Simpson – nuff said.

    7. Finding out pro wrestling is fake. KIDDING!!!! Two things I just don’t get are pro wrestling and NASCAR.

I’m sure there are other heart breakers I could name…

  3. Great call on Caminiti. That was a tough one, but we all should have seen it coming. Daryl Kile was a heart breaker too.

  4. I only have 1.

With Luis Castillo at the plate, Prior threw a fastball that was fouled down the left field line, playable for the Cubs Moises Alou near the guar rail. Alou seemed to time his jump perfectly, but as he jumped up for the ball, it got knocked off its path by a fan, Steve Bartman, who was looking for a souvenir, seemingly unaware that he had taken the out away from Alou. An angy outburst by Alou, and a dejected Prior pointing for fan interference, made everyone aware of what had happened. Castillo would go on to walk in that at-bat. Following a few more hits and an untimely error by normally sure-handed shortstop Alex Gonzalez, the disgust of fans at Wrigley seemed to be pointed solely at the unfortunate fan who had unwittingly changed history and the fate of a ballclub. A complete collapse that inning left the Cubs trailing 8-3, and led to Bartman being escorted out of the park by security who feared for the 26 year olds safety. The Cubs would go on to lose Game 7 the next day, and the Wrigley faithful overwhelmingly pinned the blame on Bartman – the new generations latest, and arguably least fortunate, victim of the dreaded curse.

  5. Brian – So well written. No doubt. So many mixed emotions when I watched that game. The fascinating thing to me was the way the people around Bartman turned on him. If you watch that replay (believe me, they showed it enough), it’s not like the dudes around him were clearing room for Alou to catch it. Even that picture you can see other people arms extended. Now he’s the goat. I felt terrible for him. You could see that he had no idea what that meant. Walkman and all….

Cubs and Tribe fans have much to cry in their spilled milk over (David Justice, Jose Mesa, Tony Fernandez, blah, blah, blah, blah).

  6. I heard that Bartman actually moved to Cleveland. How ironic.

  7. The Atlanta Braves… 11 times in 13 years… we were spared the heartache in the strike of 94.

  8. Living near Buffalo I have a good share of heartbreaks.
Bills losing 4 super bowls in a row.
Sabres loss in the 1999 Stanley Cup Finals in OT. NO GOAL!!!
2006 Stanley Cup Conferance Finals, Sabres lost in 7 Games to the Carolina Hurricanes.

  9. You know… you and the TUCK… we get it dude… if it happened today, it’d be a fumble… they changed the rule after they saw the debacle in Foxboro, but come on… Vinaterri was/is money… most people miss that FG.

  10. Jeremy –

You’re right. Even I, Bitter Raider Fan, said afterwards that they still gave up the win. The game should never have been in that position anyway. But someone has to be the villain and Brady’s a nice target.
